Markets & applications

Ink solvents, coating ingredients and resin intermediates are described in supplier portfolios. Kowa lists polyester resins and plasticizer production; Shinko also lists urethane resins, cosmetic raw materials and pharmaceutical materials. Confirm the exact grade and application requirements.

Kowa applications ↗ · Shinko applications ↗

COSMILE Europe lists humectant, skin-conditioning, solvent and viscosity-control functions. Cosmetic ingredient functions ↗

Food or beverage authorization and pharmaceutical excipient or injectable suitability have not been established here. The supplied Wako SDS recommends research use only. A cosmetic ingredient listing is not a blanket product approval.

Market size and sourcing research

The supplied market summaries disagree substantially; comparable scope and country production volumes have not been established. No market-size estimate or top-ten production ranking is adopted. BASF and Eastman are not added as confirmed makers without an exact-substance supplier reference.

1,2-Butanediol (584-03-2) is distinct from 1,3-, 1,4- and 2,3-butanediol. EPA lists 26171-83-5 as a former identifier; current CAS 584-03-2 remains the primary search identity.

Supplier grade & specification

FUJIFILM Wako Special Grade · (±)-1,2-Butanediol · codes 028-08582 and 022-08585. The supplier lists 25 mL and 500 mL packages. Research-use grade; current availability requires supplier confirmation.

The specification was revised September 11, 2014. Its supplied header displays November 3, 2026, one day after this review; that header is recorded separately rather than treated as a newer specification revision. This is a specification, not a batch certificate of analysis.

Safety, handling & storage

The Wako SDS, revision 4.04 dated February 4, 2026, reports eye irritation Category 2B and H320 under Japan JIS classification. Use suitable eye and skin protection and ventilation as directed by the full SDS.

Keep tightly closed, protected from light, in a well-ventilated place at room temperature, preferably cool. Avoid strong oxidizers, ignition sources and temperature extremes. The SDS reports transport as not regulated under ADR/RID, IMDG and IATA; this is a transport classification for the named product, not an overall safety rating.

Sustainability & green chemistry

Renewable production is a research possibility. A 2024 study demonstrated engineered E. coli making 1,2-butanediol from glucose at 0.15 g/L. It establishes a laboratory route, not commercial renewable supply, certification or a lifecycle advantage for the grades listed here.

ACS Synthetic Biology research, 2024 ↗

The Wako SDS reports 96% decomposition measured by BOD, but gives no test duration or method in that entry. This alone does not establish ready biodegradability or environmental safety. Water solubility and a high boiling point also do not establish a greener solvent; recovery energy, exposure and process design matter.

Evidence to request before making a green claim
  • Feedstock origin and independently supported renewable-carbon content.
  • Grade-specific lifecycle assessment, energy use and recovery or disposal route.
  • Full biodegradation test conditions and aquatic toxicity information.
  • Application-specific safety and regulatory documentation.

No verified bio-based, vegan, natural, food-safe or eco-certified claim is assigned to these grades. Certifications for 2,3-butanediol do not transfer to 1,2-butanediol.
